Bluebell’s Skincare founder, Almarhumah Puan Mek Yam Binti Jusoh was concerned over the misselling and misuse of skincare products containing mercury, sometimes called ‘produk kilo’ to refer to the unethical bulk purchase of unsafe products, repackaged and resold as premium and safe products.
She was especially concerned after witnessing her niece’s face becoming red and raw from trying such skincare. Worried for the safety of youths and their skin, Mek Yam recognised the danger of chronic misinformation which are widely available on profit-driven social media channels of irresponsible sellers.
She vowed to offer safe and effective skincare for women from their teens well into their mature years through Bluebell Skincare.
She also knew that one thing needs to happen before her vision could be achieved long-term, and that is to close the information gap between uneducated and sophisticated skincare users. Educating women about their skin as well as the useful vs harmful ingredients in skin care is what Bluebell aims to do.
Born in Kelantan, Mek Yam graduated from Brunel University, United Kingdom with a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Electronics and later in 1992, graduated with an MBA from Cranfield Institute of Technology, United Kingdom.
Mek Yam’s biggest contribution was in the telecommunications industry where she had worked close to 30 years, half of which she had spent in senior management positions. Her most significant appointment in the corporate world prior to establishing Bluebell was as the Senior Vice President of TIME dotCom’s Corporate Strategy and International Business Division.
Her experience in TIME dotCom serving numerous roles across various job areas spanning over 15 years include International Sales and Marketing, Regulatory, Strategic Planning and Customer Care. Mek Yam was also a notable influence in Malaysian Women Cricket having led the National Women’s Cricket Team to the Asian Games XVII in Incheon, Korea in 2014 as their Team Manager.
